LINE usage restricted by Japanese government for civil servants, after data-security incident

( April 30, 2021, 05:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The Japanese government has restricted the use of the LINE messaging application by civil servants in response to security concerns involving sensitive information and the personal information of Japanese residents in its new guidelines. In the aftermath of a scandal in which the operator of Japan’s most popular social media app allowed its Chinese affiliate to access the personal data of Japanese users. The Cabinet Secretariat and the internal affairs ministry conducted a survey, and found that LINE was widely used by central and local government officials for such purposes as public relations, consultations, cashless settlements through LINE Pay, and for internal communications among staff members. The new guidelines prohibit civil servants from storing personal data and the contents of consultations on suicides, bullying, child abuses and others issues on LINE, and from exchanging confidential information with colleagues.
