Japan's Kepco told to strengthen compliance on data access to prevent competition issues

( February 22, 2023, 03:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan’s second largest power company Kansai Electric Power, or Kepco, was told to upgrade its legal compliance to secure fair competition with new power retailers by the industry regulator. After the Osaka-based company reported a large number of employees had accessed customer data held by its power transmission subsidiary, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Kepco had an organizational problem involving several compliance issues that allowed its employees to use privately-held customer data to gain an unfair marketing edge over rival power retailers. Therefore, the ministry issued an emergency instruction to Kepco on Tuesday to strengthen compliance, telling it to establish a third-party commission to examine the situation, take additional measures when necessary, and to continue to respond to METI’s follow-up measures.A statement in Japanese follows....
