Taiwanese, Japanese firms eye Philippines' third telco slot

The name of the Taiwanese company wasn't disclosed. The development is the latest since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared he wanted a third telco player to break up the duopoly held by PLDT and Globe Telecom. Presidential communications secretary Martin Andanar, who had earlier announced that South Korea’s LG Plus and China Telecom were interested in the president’s invitation, said the third telco player would be barred from selling its shares later to the other telcos to ensure the duopoly would finally be broken. The formal bidding process for the slot is targeted to open by March, after the release of the terms of reference next month....
