France seeks law to block hate sites and 'mirror' sites, digital minister says

( October 27, 2020, 13:24 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The French government is preparing a measure to allow judges to block hate sites — as well as "mirror" sites that host identical content — in a proposed bill to tackle Islamist separatism, the country's digital minister has said. Cédric O said in an opinion article that it shouldn't take months for a website containing jihadist or anti-Semitic content to be blocked, but mere minutes for the same content to appear on a site with a different URL extension. France is also supporting a measure in the EU's upcoming Digital Services Act that will impose obligations on Internet platforms to ensure that they remove illegal content. O said there should be a supervisor to regulate and impose sanctions on platforms that fail to abide by the rules. The proposals come after the French Constitutional Council in June overturned the main parts of a French law that required platforms to remove hateful content within 24 hours, and to flag terrorist propaganda and child sexual abuse material within one hour, or face fines.The article in French is below: ...
