Complaints vs Malaysian e-payment provider Touch 'n Go are consumer issues, competition agency says in response to criticisms

( January 30, 2023, 02:30 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Complaints against Malaysian electronic-payment system provider Touch 'n Go, or TnG, the sole smart card used for toll roads in the country, are consumer issues that do not fall under the  jurisdiction of the Malaysia Competition Commission, or MyCC, the regulator said in a statement over the weekend. It was responding to a call from the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association for a review of MyCC's effectiveness. The consumer group said MyCC had failed to regulate TnG's monopolistic behavior, despite receiving complaints over the years of the company's abuse of this monopoly power, such as by imposing surcharges or requiring users to shift to a RFID tag system. Despite its lack of jurisdiction, MyCC said it had conducted some limited interventions on the issues against TnG, resulting in changes for consumers. The full statement is attached. ...
