Broadcasters say antitrust suit against NCAA could undermine sports broadcasting

( December 20, 2013, 00:23 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Fox Broadcasting and the Big Ten Network, two prominent broadcasters of college sports, have asked for permission to file an amicus brief in support of the National Collegiate Athletic Association defense against an antitrust class action filed by current and former college football and basketball players. The plaintiffs have taken "the extreme and unprecedented position" that broadcasters need the express consent of each and every participant in football and basketball games. "According to Plaintiffs, if one player, cheerleader, referee or coach withholds consent, the Sports Broadcasters may not lawfully televise the sporting event to millions of viewers waiting to watch it,” Fox and the Big Ten said in a proposed amicus filing. Please see attached document....
