Lebedev papers' stake sales raise neither competition nor public-interest concerns, government told

( September 16, 2019, 14:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Media mogul Evgeny Lebedev's sale of minority stakes in his Evening Standard and Independent newspapers to Saudi-linked investors raise neither competition nor public-interest concerns, two watchdogs said in separate advisory reports — submitted earlier this year but published today — to the UK government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Competition and Markets Authority said the sales don't meet a test for "substantial lessening of competition," and Ofcom said it didn't make an adverse finding on "accurate presentation of news ground or the free expression of opinion ground" — meaning that in-depth reference of the case is unwarranted.
