EU energy taxation rules not in line with 2030 climate ambitions, report says

( September 12, 2019, 15:50 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Energy taxation rules risk derailing the EU’s climate targets for 2030, the European Commission said in a report today. The EU needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent by 2030, based on a bloc-wide target. But taxation provisions fail to link the levies with the actual energy content and CO2 emissions of the products they cover, namely electricity and fuels used to operate engines or to produce heat. The report also said the rules don't reflect the current mix of energy products present on the EU market. Over the weekend, EU finance ministers will hold a debate on energy taxation in a meeting hosted in Helsinki.Statement follows. ...
