Japanese contractors in maglev bid-rigging probe may have swayed smaller deals

Prosecutors and officials from the Japan Fair Trade Commission suspect that the four companies — Kajima Corp, Taisei Corp, Obayashi Corp and Shimizu Corp — may have exerted influence on small and medium-sized contractors, according to the newspaper. Meanwhile, the Yomiuri newspaper reported that a Taisei executive told his counterparts from smaller contractors not to take part in bidding for certain projects. The four contractors began to negotiate with one another to avoid losses because the train operator had demanded a steep price cut, the Nikkei newspaper reported....
