UK deepfake law strengthened alongside recent online safety legislation

( April 16, 2024, 09:03 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Maliciously creating a sexually explicit deepfake image of an adult is becoming a new criminal offense in the UK, in addition to recent legislation that makes sharing such images illegal, the UK Ministry of Justice announced today. The law will affect fast-growing websites dedicated to deepfake porn, which are supervised by the online safety watchdog Ofcom. The new offense came to life through an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill. Individual offenders maliciously creating explicit deepfake images without consent of the person depicted will face an unlimited fine under the new law, even when there is no intent to share that image.
