USDA urged to implement merger moratorium, end antitrust exemptions in response to fertilizer industry concentration

( June 22, 2022, 22:11 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The US Department of Agriculture, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice should implement a merger moratorium on further consolidation in the fertilizer industry, particularly where dominant fertilizer corporations risk acquiring potential competitors, the Open Markets Institute wrote to the USDA. It also recommended putting an end to antitrust exemptions such as the Webb-Pomerene Act for domestic and regional producer cartels, a crackdown on exclusive agreements between large fertilizer corporations and wholesalers that provide storage and other services to farmers, and removing trade barriers on imports of fertilizer from abroad. “The USDA must do more to quickly address market concentration that is choking off food supply chains, creating shortages and higher prices, and pushing small farmers to their limits,” the institute said.Statement follows.
