Japanese antitrust panel to propose rules in weeks on companies to be regulated by new smartphone law

( October 2, 2024, 00:24 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A new panel convened under the Japanese antitrust regulator is set to propose rules in the coming weeks on the kind of Big Tech companies that will be subject to a new smartphone software law. The panel, under the Japan Fair Trade Commission, agreed earlier this week with the regulator’s schedule for public consultation in October-November on the scale of companies to be regulated under the Act on Promotion of Competition for Specified Smartphone Software. The rules will take effect by Dec. 19. Other implementation rules will be finalized by next June, after the panel wraps up its discussion around March, and public input is accepted on draft cabinet orders and other rules.
