New Zealand cyber security incidents cost individuals $12 million

( March 24, 2021, 05:02 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Zealanders amassed direct financial losses from cyber security incidents in 2020 of almost NZ$17 million ($12 million), the New Zealand government's cyber security agency has reported. In a statement today, CERT NZ, which is overseen by the New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, said it had received 7,809 reports of cyber security incidents last year, up from 4,740 reports in 2019. The reason for the surge in incidents, the agency said, is in part due to the increase in time New Zealander's spent online during the Covid-19 pandemic, with phishing and credential harvesting, where an attacker collects personal data to perform an array of online crimes like fraud, the most reported form of attack. The full statement from CERT NZ follows: ...
