KPPU fines 32 cattle breeders $8m in Jabodetabek cartel case

Tempo cited KPPU commissioner and adjudicator Chandra Setiawan as saying at a final hearing in the case on Friday that the companies had been proved to have arranged cattle sales in the cities of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi and neglected government policy on sales volumes of cattle imports. Cattle breeding firm Tanjung Unggul Mandiri refused to pay its fine — the largest, at 21 billion rupiah — and plans to file an appeal against the KPPU, Detik.com reported. The fines were calculated based on the profit the companies made during 2015. In relation to the case, Metro TV News reported that the KPPU was issuing recommendations for the agriculture ministry to design a demand driven-based policy to determine cattle supply. It also asked the trade ministry to set import limits one year before any transactions took place and to check for possible affiliations among breeding firms to prevent unfair competition....
