Most Australian data breaches a result of compromised login, password details, report finds

( August 27, 2019, 06:18 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Compromised credentials accounted for one-third of the data breaches reported to the country's privacy regulator between April 1 and June 20, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said today. Login and password information used to gain unauthorised access to personal information points to the human factor involved in data breaches and the need for staff training to ensure individuals avoid clicking on phishing emails, or use passwords across services, Australian Information and Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk said. The government figures are the latest in a series of reports since Australia's Notifiable Data Breaches program came into effect in February 2018, under which all companies, government agencies and individuals required to secure data under the 1988 Privacy Act must notify the OAIC of any data breaches. Reports will be published on a six-monthly basis from now on, the OAIC said today.Full statement follows:...
