G7 leaders support ​Australia's attempt to tackle online extremist content

( August 27, 2019, 05:16 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australian efforts to tackle extreme violent online content garnered  "tremendous support" this week at a meeting of the world's seven major economies, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. In an interview following the G7 meeting in France, Morrison said his government would continue efforts to make digital companies apply the same rules to ensure their products were safe for consumers as those applied by companies operating in "the physical world." Morrison said that digital platforms including Facebook and Google needed to take better control and more responsibility for the content they host and that he would prefer an industry-led approach, rather than regulation designed by the world's largest economies. Over the weekend, Morrison announced that Australia would provide online technology companies including Facebook with a legal framework to enable them to block terrorist content during, what the government describes as, "crisis events,".Full interview transcript follows: ...
