Aurizon's One Rail move could harm coal-haulage competition, Australian regulator warns

In a statement announcing the publication of a statement of issues, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission said that both the publicly listed Aurizon and One Rail are well-established suppliers of coal-haulage services in the northeastern state of Queensland and the eastern state of New South Wales and, as a result, the acquisition poses competition challenges. “By reducing the number of competitors … from three to two and removing an important competitor to Pacific National and Aurizon, we have preliminary concerns that the proposed acquisition of One Rail by Aurizon would be likely to substantially lessen competition,” ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said in today’s statement.
