Federal judge rules Google's scanning of books is fair use

( November 14, 2013, 17:16 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: US District Judge Denny Chin has granted Google’s motion for summary judgment against the Author’s Guild, ruling that Google’s scanning of books for its Google Books project qualified as fair use because it is transformative. The project "has transformed book text into data for purposes of substantive research, including data mining and text mining in new areas, thereby opening up new fields of research," he ruled. "Words in books are being used in a way they have not been used before.” Chin said the project provides "significant public benefits" and maintains "respectful consideration for the rights of authors and other creative individuals, and without adversely impacting the rights of copyright holders."See document below....
