World ‘not on track’ to reach Paris climate goals, UN says

( February 26, 2021, 16:56 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Governments around the globe must “redouble” their emissions-cutting efforts if they are to reach the global climate goals of the 2015 Paris accord, the UN has said today, releasing a report assessing plans submitted by the end of last year to curb emissions by 2030. The level of ambition communicated to the UN implies a reduction of less than 1 percent in 2030 compared with 2010, whereas the IPCC has indicated that emissions should be slashed by 45 percent to meet the 1.5 degree temperature goal. Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of UN Climate Change, welcomed “momentum” of net-zero pledges, but urged countries to provide more “clarity” on their plans to reach those goals. Statement follows.
