Google gets French non-compliance fine over publishers' content and AI training

( March 20, 2024, 07:48 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Google must pay a fine of 250 million euros after the French competition authority decided the company breached commitments given in 2022 to remunerate publishers and press agencies when indexing their content in search results. The regulator said Google hadn't held to four of its seven commitments. Furthermore, it said Google had also trained its AI foundation model Bard, now called Gemini, on publishers' content, without informing them or giving them a chance to opt-out. Google is not contesting the allegations and will take steps to address the shortcomings, the regulator said.  The statement follows. A PDF with graphics is attached. ...
