The first hearing in a cartel case before the commission was held yesterday. Japfa Senior Vice President Budiarto Soebijanto said the decision to cull up to 6 million hens had been taken following recommendations by the agriculture ministry to prevent further price falls. In a separate report, Tempo cited KPPU chairman Syarkawi Rauf as saying that 12 chicken breeding firms had been accused of violating Article 11 of Law No. 5 of 1999 on competition for culling millions of hens. The companies were also suspected of having done exclusive deals to push small-scale breeders to buy day-old chicks bundled with chicken feed and vaccine, abusing their dominant positions, Rauf said....
