Liquidity shift in equities markets may call for regulatory consideration, Iosco says

( August 11, 2020, 16:06 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The transition in equities markets away from a reliance on formal exchange market makers to new liquidity providers may present both benefits and challenges, the International Organization of Securities Commissions has said. The technology-driven shift means that in many places, centralized securities markets with primarily manual trading have evolved into fragmented markets with primarily automated trading, Iosco said in a report published today. Financial incentive programs, such as rebates, used by trading venues to attract liquidity mean "the corresponding oversight role of regulators may require a consideration of new elements to ensure that evolving markets continue to function effectively," the report said.Statement follows.
