Large digital platforms should be regulated by soft approach, Japan's business lobby says

( April 13, 2022, 03:28 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Japan should pursue a soft legal approach to further regulating large digital platforms, rather than expanding the interpretation of the existing antitrust law or creating new legislation, said Japan’s biggest business lobby Keidanren. The group representing Japan’s blue-chip companies said that the Japan Fair Trade Commission could present what kind of conduct would constitute antitrust violations, rather than expanding the interpretation of the Antimonopoly Act. There are pros and cons regarding the drafting of new digital-market legislation similar to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, and further study is needed, said the lobby group. Keidanren also called for speedier, more transparent merger reviews by the JFTC, in its interim report on the competition laws in response to digitalization and globalization.
