​Judges must oversee new encryption laws, Australian privacy watchdog tells lawmakers

( February 28, 2019, 03:34 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Australia’s privacy regulator has renewed its call for Australia’s controversial new encryption laws to be overseen by an independent judge, who would consider any demand for decrypted messages before a request is presented to a technology company. In a new submission to a parliamentary committee reviewing the existing law, which was approved by the legislature in December, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner also said that any request to issue a demand for a decrypted message should be accompanied by a mandatory technical assessment. The new rules allow law-enforcement and spy agencies to demand companies such as Facebook hand over decrypted messages.
