Review of Australia's grocery code to focus on supermarket-supplier relationship, introduction of fines

( February 5, 2024, 00:54 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The review of Australia’s Food and Grocery Code of Conduct will focus on the relationship between supermarkets and their suppliers and the introduction of fines for non-compliance, the former competition minister said. In a statement announcing the release of a consultation paper, Craig Emerson, the independent reviewer and former competition minister, said the government-commissioned review of the code would focus on assessing whether the voluntary code should be amended to be made mandatory with enforcement options such as infringement notices and financial penalties. The review would also assess whether suppliers are hesitant to complain about supermarkets out of fear of having their products remove. The code was introduced in 2015 with four main signatories, Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and Metcash, to address the imbalance of market power between supermarkets and their suppliers. The full statement by Craig Emerson, independent reviewer of the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, follows; the consultation paper for the review of the code is attached:...
