Shoprite, Woolworths, other grocery chains face South African market inquiry

( May 10, 2017, 10:46 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Africa's Competition Commission has begun public hearings in Cape Town as part of its inquiry into the grocery retail market. National supermarket chains Shoprite, Spar, Pick n Pay and Woolworths account for 90 percent of the market, and the inquiry is examining the effect on competition of a range of sector features, including their impact on small and independent retailers and the competition implications of long-term exclusive leases on retail properties.
