Vodafone’s TPG Telecom acquisition could harm competition, Australian regulator suggests

( December 12, 2018, 22:59 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: The acquisition of Australian telecommunications company TPG Telecom by Vodafone Hutchison Australia could reduce competition in the market for mobile-phone services and affect prices in the provision of fixed broadband, Australia’s competition regulator has said in a preliminary assessment of the $A15 billion ($10.8 billion today) deal. In a statement of issues published today, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, or ACCC, suggested “the merged TPG-Vodafone would not have the incentive to operate in the same way” as the companies would have done separately, and that “competition in the market would be reduced as a result.” Vodafone Hutchison Australia is jointly owned by the UK’s Vodafone Group and Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison.ACCC's statement of issues is attached; ACCC statement follows....
