Chinese social platforms to display names of self-media accounts with more than 500,000 followers

( October 31, 2023, 03:10 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Chinese social platforms, including Sina Weibo, which operates China’s equivalent of Twitter, and Tencent’s instant-messaging app, as well as Chinese short-video apps Douyin and Kuaishou will display the real names of self-media account holders that have more than half a million followers. The names of individuals as well as the names of institutions that operate the accounts will be displayed at account homepages once platforms have obtained their consent. Most social platforms have already said they will first require real names for accounts with more than one million followers, followed by those with more than 500,000 followers. Self-media accounts that discuss political events, finance, medical and health issues, judicial and legal topics will be the main targets....
