EU carbon border tax should start in 2025 with phaseout of free carbon permits, lawmakers suggest

( January 7, 2022, 11:12 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A planned EU carbon levy on dirty imports should be in full force as of January 2025 — alongside the end of free carbon permits and compensation for high power prices due to the Emissions Trading System for the sectors covered — the European Parliament’s economy committee has said, in a draft report aimed at influencing the position of the leading environment committee. Before the end of a pilot phase, which should end in 2024, the European Commission should propose to expand the charge to imports of oil, paper, glass, plastics and “downstream” products, among others, and revenue generated should flow into the EU’s budget, the report says....
