Telikom PNG, PNG DataCo deal granted preliminary authorization by Papua New Guinea regulator

( May 25, 2018, 06:37 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: A merger between Telikom PNG and telecommunications rival PNG DataCo moved a step closer this week after Papua New Guinea's competition watchdog granted the parties authorization allowing them to seek an exemption for business conduct that may raise competition concerns. The two companies, which provide mobile-phone services in Papua New Guinea, had iniatially also requested clearance for the deal — a separate process under the country's competition laws — but later requested a delay on that request. As a result, the head of the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission, Paulus Ain, said the clearance request would be dealt with separately. The merger is unusual because both companies already belong to a state-owned holding company, Kumul Consolidated Holdings....
