When Canadian dairy giant Saputo first entered the Australian market four years ago, regulatory hurdles were easy enough to clear. The family company may have been a big player in North America, but in Australia it was a rank outsider whose arrival could only add to the industry’s diversity. That’s no longer the case. Saputo is now a significant local player ready to expand at a vulnerable time for diary producers and distributors. And its new acquisition target, Murray Goulburn, has regulatory headaches of its own.
