In Brief

Facebook violated its 2011 privacy consent decree with the US Federal Trade Commission by allowing third-party access to vast amounts of its users’ personal information and overriding their privacy preferences, a former chief technologist with the FTC told a US Senate Commerce Committee panel. Both the Cambridge Analytica leak and recent news reports that Facebook negotiated data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 mobile device makers indicate that the company has likely violated its privacy agreement with the FTC, said Askan Soltani, FTC chief technologist from 2014 to 2015.
